4 Most Common Mistakes When Buying a High-End TV

Don’t Fall for Common Traps When Upgrading Your Video Display

4 Most Common Mistakes When Buying a High-End TV

Buying a new high-end TV can be one of the most exciting purchases of the year. Each year, top manufacturers like Sony and Samsung put out new models boasting the latest features, but within all the alphabet soup of features, it can be hard to figure out which is the best option.

Homes in Springfield, MO, and the surrounding lake communities often feature open layouts and large windows that make the choice even more difficult. It’s not enough to just pick the one with the biggest resolution. It’s important to match it to the space.

At 3D Smart Homes, we’ve seen people make all kinds of mistakes when buying TVs, often wasting thousands of dollars on good TVs that aren’t the right fit. Below, we outline some of the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Choosing TV Size Without Measuring the Room

You heard that Sony now has a 100” TV and you can’t wait to bring it into your home, but your seating layout and mounting space can’t accommodate it. It’s easy to think that bigger is better (and certainly, few rooms in luxury homes should have TVs less than 55”). It’s easy to be wowed by the largest screens at a store or showroom, but be cautious before making a purchase.

At 3D Smart Homes, we’ll help you choose a size that fits the available wall space and allows for comfortable viewing. As a general rule of thumb your viewing distance should be 1 to 1.5 times the size of your screen. So if you’re sitting eight feet away, the screen should be 65-75.”

Mistake #2: Ignoring Lighting Conditions and Viewing Angles

Unless you have a dedicated theater, your TV will likely be in a room with large windows that cause glare and washed-out images. OLED Mini-LED and QLED panels behave very differently in bright and dark rooms, so we look closely at the natural light in your home before recommending a display.

Mini-LED and QLED models use powerful backlights that cut through glare far more effectively. Their higher brightness and anti-reflective layers make them a better match for living rooms with large windows or open layouts that receive ample daylight.

We also evaluate how your seating layout affects viewing angles. Some displays lose color and contrast when viewed from the side, so we study where each seat falls in relation to the screen. OLED panels generally offer the most consistent off-axis performance, while certain QLED and Mini-LED models also perform well, depending on their design.

Mistake #3: Focusing Only on Resolution Instead of Overall Picture Performance

Many people look at the 4K label and assume it guarantees top-tier performance, but resolution is only one part of what defines a high-end TV. A display can have millions of pixels yet still fall short if it struggles with contrast or color saturation. True picture quality comes from the way the panel controls light.

Strong black levels give images depth. Effective HDR processing expands the range between dark and bright areas. High peak brightness brings out details in movies, sports, and shows. These traits create a more lifelike picture than resolution alone.

Performance also depends on how the TV handles motion and how well the backlight or local dimming system works. Poor dimming introduces halo effects around bright objects. Weak color accuracy creates washed-out skin tones or overly saturated scenes. Low-latency models make fast action look blurry. If you love film, focus on contrast and color fidelity. If you are a gamer,  prioritize motion handling and low input lag.

Mistake #4: Overlooking Audio Quality

High-end TVs deliver impressive picture quality, but their built-in speakers rarely provide the sound performance needed to match the screen. The slim design of modern displays leaves little room for full-range drivers, resulting in unclear dialogue and dull action scenes. Many buyers focus on screen specs and forget the audio. But without the right sound system, even the best TV feels flat.

We guide clients toward audio solutions that match both the room and their viewing preferences. A soundbar can be a clean, effective upgrade for everyday viewing, while a subwoofer adds depth and warmth. Surround sound, using architectural speakers, creates an immersive environment for movies, sports, and gaming.
